The reasons are practical: NHS implant provision is very limited, private UK prices have risen sharply, and direct flights between the UK and Sofia take around three hours. This article explains the specific factors that make Bulgaria a realistic option for UK patients - honestly, including where it makes less sense.

The NHS does not cover dental implants for most patients
NHS dental implants are available only in specific clinical circumstances - typically not for elective or cosmetic full mouth restoration. Most patients needing implants must go private.
Private implant costs in the UK have risen considerably since 2020. Full mouth restoration (upper and lower arch) at a specialist UK clinic can cost significantly more than the equivalent in Sofia, even accounting for travel.
Post-Brexit cost pressure
Brexit changed the cost structure of private dental care in the UK. Import costs for materials rose, EU freedom of movement for dental professionals ended, and staffing costs at UK clinics increased. The gap between UK and EU dental pricing has widened since 2021.
Bulgaria is an EU member state. Its clinics source materials and devices within the EU single market, use EU-registered implant systems, and maintain EU standard infection control and sterilisation protocols.
Direct flights from multiple UK airports
Sofia Airport (SOF) is served by direct flights from London Gatwick, London Luton, London Stansted, and a growing number of regional UK airports. Flight time is typically around three hours.

EU standards, English coordination - and who operates
A common concern for UK patients is whether standards in Bulgaria match what they expect. Bulgaria is an EU member state - implant systems are EU MDR-registered, sterilisation and infection control protocols follow EU frameworks, and surgeons qualify under national and EU standards.
